As part of the 2031 Federal Horticultural Show (BUGA31), a sports park is to be built on the Tesche core site. The former “Wassack” brownfield site will be transformed into a sports park offering a diverse and inclusive range of sports and recreational activities.
Last year, the firm “relais Landschaftsarchitekten” submitted a design for the BUGA31 sites and won the open-space planning competition. Part of this winning design is a proposal for the sports park.
This design forms the basis for further planning. That’s why we’d like to hear from you about which activities are particularly important to you, what ideas you have for the individual areas, and what you think should be taken into account in the further planning.
All feedback will be evaluated once the survey is complete and forwarded to the planning firm. We cannot promise that every idea will be implemented. However, your input will help us further develop the plans and tailor the sports park as closely as possible to the needs of its future users.
The Federal Horticultural Show is a major German exhibition that takes place every two years in different cities, focusing on horticulture and landscape architecture.
In Wuppertal, the core areas, the co-areas, and BUGA+ form the three pillars of BUGA31. The core areas are the central locations of the 2031 Federal Horticultural Show in Wuppertal. A wide variety of activities will take place here during BUGA—such as flower plantings, themed gardens, events, and activities. At the same time, many of these locations are designed to have a lasting impact even after BUGA has ended—for example, through new paths, green spaces, or facilities such as a cable car or a suspension bridge. The core areas thus combine temporary experiences with sustainable changes for the city and its residents.
In 2025, the open-space planning competition for the core areas took place. Landscape architecture firms developed designs for the central BUGA open spaces in Wuppertal. The goal was not only to create attractive exhibition spaces for the year 2031 but, above all, to plan parks and green spaces that could be used permanently in the years to come. From ten submitted designs, a panel of experts selected the winning design by the Berlin-based firm “relais Landschaftsarchitekten” in late 2025.
The winning proposal also includes a design for the sports park. This proposal offers a few suggestions regarding the design and, for example, the types of sports to be featured. However, the design is not yet final, so the results of the public engagement process can be incorporated as the design is finalized.
Through public participation, we want to design the sports park in a way that meets the needs of as many people as possible. That’s why we’re interested in learning which sports and recreational activities are particularly important to you, whether any are missing from the design, and what features the individual sports areas should offer. In addition, we’d like to learn how you plan to use the sports park and what recreational and infrastructure amenities would help make it an attractive place for sports, socializing, and relaxation. We’re also interested in hearing about any potential barriers to use, so that the sports park can be accessible and welcoming to as many people as possible.
To ensure that as many people as possible can participate, we’re offering a variety of ways to get involved:
Online participation: Between September 4 and 25, you can take part in our online survey. You’ll find the link at the top of this page.
Outreach events: On September 5, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., we’ll be at the Bergisches Plateau along the Nordbahntrasse, and on September 18, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., we’ll be at the Calisthenics Park along the Nordbahntrasse (Benrather Straße entrance). Feel free to stop by and talk to us in person!
Workshop: On September 29, we’re hosting a workshop from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The location is still to be determined. During the workshop, you’ll be able to explore different perspectives on the design at various stations and share your opinions on different aspects of the sports park.
We will document and evaluate the results of the various public engagement formats. We will publish the results at the bottom of this page.
We will then forward your feedback to the firm “relais Landschaftsarchitekten.” They will finalize the design plans for the sports park later this year, taking the results of the public engagement process into account.
