The Nützenberg Park in Elberfeld-West is to be further developed as a co-site as part of the Federal Horticultural Show through 2031. For example, the sports field will be transformed into a multifunctional sports park. The “Nützenberg” co-site is directly adjacent to the BUGA core area, which includes the planned entry and exit points for the suspension bridge. The co-site will remain freely accessible even during the BUGA.
We’d like to learn how you currently use and experience the park. What do you particularly like? Where do you see room for improvement? Please take part in our online survey between September 4 and 25. During the same period, postcards will also be available in the park; you can write on them and drop them in the mailboxes on site. On September 12, we’d also like to cordially invite you to a small event at Weyerbuschturm Square.
Your ideas and suggestions will help us tailor the park’s future design to the needs of its users. After assessing their feasibility, we’ll incorporate your ideas into the park’s redesign.
In the years leading up to the opening of BUGA 2031, many areas—including those outside the core site—are to be renovated and reimagined. The last redesign of the Nützenberg Park took place as part of the 2006 Regional Exhibition. These areas have not been updated for 20 years and are largely in need of renovation. The park’s redevelopment will incorporate both its character as a natural and recreational space and the playgrounds and Kaiserhöhe sports facility. The existing sports field is to be transformed into a multifunctional sports park.
But we need your expertise, because you are the experts on the area. We would like to gather this collective expertise and provide it to Department 103 (Green Spaces and Forests) as a foundation for planning the facility.
Of course, the historic park within the landscape conservation area will be carefully redesigned. It will continue to be, above all, a place for nature, recreation, play, and sports.
As part of the ongoing development leading up to BUGA 2031, we aim to enhance the existing qualities of the Nützenberg while also developing new ideas for the park’s future. We’re focusing on the park as a whole, as well as specific areas such as the playgrounds and the sports facilities.
What does the Nützenberg mean to you? When and how do you spend time there? Which spots do you particularly enjoy visiting—and which ones not so much? What do you feel is missing, and what would you like to see in the future? More opportunities to linger? A greater connection to nature, or a more enjoyable experience?
A three-week online public participation period will take place between September 4 and September 25, 2026. You’ll find the link to the survey at the top of this page during that time. In addition, postcards will be available during the same period at Weyerbuschturm-Platz, the children’s playground (formerly the riding arena), and the sports field. You can write your comments on these postcards and drop them into the mailboxes right there on site.
In addition, on September 12 between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., we’ll be at Weyerbuschturm-Platz in the Nützenberg Park to talk with anyone who’d like to share ideas with us about the future of the park, including its playgrounds and sports facilities.

We will document the results of the online survey and our on-site discussions, publish them on this page, and make them available to the Department of Green Spaces and Forests for their consideration—they will be incorporated into the design brief.
