Workshops provide input on the parking concept

Two workshops were held in November with randomly selected Wuppertal residents from the Nordstadt and Luisenviertel districts as part of the parking space concept.

The first workshop with 25 participants focused on the Luisenviertel, while the second workshop with 50 participants focused on the Nordstadt. The aim of the two days was to gather input from citizens from the respective areas on what they consider to be sensible measures. For example, the focus was on the high parking pressure, making parking easier for residents or visitors, sidewalk parking, delivery traffic and the general quality of life in the neighborhoods.

In the two workshops, it became clear that the participants assessed the situation in their neighborhoods differently, in some cases even quite differently. In particular, small group work made it clear how challenging it is to come up with jointly supported solutions. The participants from the Luisenviertel emphasized that many current regulations would be useful in principle, but that their effect often fails due to illegal parking. In the Nordstadt workshop, the participants placed particular emphasis on additional parking options, for example by opening up existing multi-storey parking lots or cooperating with supermarkets.

"The possibility of resident parking was also mentioned as a key need in order to reduce the parking pressure from vehicles from outside the city," reports Stella Schwietering, project manager from the Roads and Traffic department. Overall, both workshops were very well received by the participants. They particularly appreciated the opportunity to contribute their own views and ideas in a structured setting. "Despite some controversial discussions, the overall exchange was very constructive and important for the further development of our concept," says Schwietering.

The results of the workshops will now be reviewed by the administration to ensure they are proportionate and lawful. Stakeholders from the neighborhoods, such as tradespeople and cultural institutions, will also be consulted. Finally, politicians must discuss and decide on measures as part of the presentation of the parking concept.

The parking concept will include proposals for measures to improve the traffic and parking situation in the Luisenviertel and Nordstadt. The concept should be completed by spring 2026 and then presented to city politicians before it is published.
