Suspension railway forecourt: changes to the schedule

As part of the participation process for the redesign of the forecourt of the Alter Markt suspension railway station, numerous comments, ideas and suggestions were submitted by the urban community. These form an important basis for further planning. We would like to thank you for your commitment!

Unfortunately, there have currently been some changes to the schedule: The construction work at the "Alter Markt" suspension railway stop by WSW mobil has been delayed, as the entire roof of the stop now also has to be removed and renewed all around. This is the result of a current expert opinion and has an impact on the construction times and the subsequent redesign of the square. Previously, construction work on the stop was due to be completed in December 2026. However, taking into account the roof renovation, the work is now not expected to be completed until November 2027.

This delay will have a drastic impact on the subsequent permanent redesign of the square. The planned completion date for the redesign (31.12.2027) can no longer be met, as a construction period of at least 12 months must be assumed here and the areas will only be available after the renovation of the bus stop. Theoretically, the redesign of the area would not be completed until November 2028. However, the urban development funds approved for the redesign as part of the ISEK Innenstadt Barmen must be spent by 31.12.2027 at the latest. This means that the funding will most likely have to be returned and only the city's own contribution to the measure (approx. €300,000) can be used in other Barmen construction projects.

Irrespective of this sudden and unsatisfactory development trend, the city of Wuppertal continues to aim to redesign the suspension railway forecourt in a timely manner, taking into account the many valuable comments from the participation.
The city of Wuppertal is currently working on developing alternative financing options. At the same time, planning is continuing so that the square design can be implemented once the construction work on the suspension railway station has been completed. As things currently stand, the redesign of the Alter Markt suspension railway forecourt is expected from the beginning of 2028.

The participation results obtained in the surveys will also be passed on to other municipal projects that involve the redesign of public spaces and can therefore also benefit from the information provided.
