Participation formats for the parking space concept: review 2025 and outlook 2026

As part of the parking space concept for Nordstadt and the Luisenviertel, a variety of different participation formats were implemented over the course of the year.

It kicked off in February with a public information event at the Alte Feuerwache with around 80 participants from the local community, businesses, politics and initiatives. At the same time, a four-week online participation period was launched, in which all Wuppertal residents were able to submit problem areas, needs and ideas here on talbeteiligung.de. In March, relevant stakeholders such as parking garage operators, car sharing or micromobility providers and initiatives came together to contribute their perspectives and support options. This was followed in the summer by a workshop with Year 4 at Marienstraße elementary school and a workshop with Year 7 at Hermann-von-Helmholtz-Realschule on young people's perspectives on mobility, parking and their school environment. In addition, neighborhood-related walks were conducted in which around 20 citizens took part. The temporary redesign of parking spaces was the highlight of the summer. Over six weeks, people were able to experience how street space can be used differently. The campaign provided important information on the acceptance of such measures and the needs in the neighborhood. In addition, local tradespeople, doctors' surgeries and larger institutions were interviewed in order to record their views on the parking situation and future development. The year 2025 concluded with two workshops with randomly selected residents of Nordstadt and Luisenviertel, in which concrete measures were developed.

In 2026, it is planned to meet again with relevant stakeholders to jointly develop concrete measures. In addition, further online participation and co-creation with residents of the neighborhoods are planned in order to further refine measures. Together with a parking space survey, the participation formats will then form the basis for developing possible courses of action to be presented to politicians.

We would also like to take the opportunity to look back on this eventful year to thank you: Thank you for your many contributions and diverse perspectives! It is very valuable for us to benefit from your knowledge as experts in the neighborhood.
